Architect Bimal Patel: The Creative Force Behind India’s Iconic New Parliament Building.

Renowned architect Bimal Patel has played a pivotal role in designing the new Parliament building, which is slated for inauguration on Saturday, May 27. Hailing from Gujarat, Patel is a distinguished figure in the field of architecture, having worked on numerous iconic projects. His portfolio includes the Kashi Vishwanath Corridor and the groundbreaking Sabarmati Riverfront project. However, the crown jewel of his career is undoubtedly the Central Vista Redevelopment project.

Bimal Hasmukh Patel boasts an impressive career spanning over three decades, specializing in urban design and planning. He currently serves as the President of CEPT University (formerly the Centre for Environmental Planning and Technology) in Ahmedabad. Additionally, Patel leads HCP Design Planning and Management Private Limited, a firm founded by his father, Hasmukh C Patel, in 1960. Hasmukh Patel was also a highly acclaimed architect, responsible for designing numerous iconic structures.

Educated at St. Xavier’s High School, Loyola Hall in Ahmedabad, Bimal Patel pursued his passion for architecture at the School of Architecture, Center for Environmental Planning and Technology (CEPT). He later went on to complete his Ph.D. from UC Berkeley in the United States in 1995. In 1990, Bimal joined his father’s firm and began making his mark on the architectural landscape.

Bimal Patel’s expertise and innovative designs have garnered him several prestigious awards, including the Aga Khan Award in 1992, the World Architecture Award in 2001, and the esteemed Padma Shri in 2019. His impressive portfolio features notable projects such as the Kankaria Lake Development, Aga Khan Academy Hyderabad, Bhuj Development Plan, Entrepreneurship Development Institute of India building, Gujarat High Court, Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Ahmedabad New Campus, and Swarnim Sankul at Gandhinagar.

Securing the consultancy bid for the Central Vista project, Bimal Patel’s firm, HCP Designs, has been entrusted with the responsibility of designing the new Parliament building and overseeing the entire Central Vista redevelopment. The consultancy services provided by Patel’s firm encompass a wide range of tasks, including preparing the project’s master plan, designing structures, estimating costs, integrating traffic flow, organizing parking facilities, and creating the landscape. Last year, Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri disclosed that Patel’s firm would receive Rs 229.75 crore for its invaluable consultancy services, which encompass the ambitious Central Vista project, including the new Parliament building.

With his visionary approach, technical expertise, and artistic sensibility, Bimal Patel has cemented his place as a leading figure in the world of architecture. His remarkable contributions to the Central Vista Redevelopment project, including the design of the new Parliament building, will shape the architectural landscape of India and leave a lasting legacy for generations to come.
